Facies Technical Terms
Facies: A distinctive group of characteristics that distinguish one group from another within a stratigraphic unit; the sum of all primary lithologic and paleontological characteristics of sediments or sedimentary rock that are used to infer its origin and environment; the general nature of appearance of sediments or sedimentary rock produced under a given set of conditions; e.g.: contrasting river-channel facies and overbank-flood-plain facies in alluvial valley fills.
